1. Get rid of your extra clutter rather than moving it with you. You could have a yard sale, use craigslist or give it to friends. The key is if you don’t need it at the new place, don’t take it with you.

2. When packing, you should clearly label your boxes prior to packing. Not just by room, you can map out each room and be even more specific about your packing. use a numbering or color system to increase your organization. The number one waste of time when moving is trying to remember where stuff goes. By having a plan, you will come be one step ahead when you move into your new place.

3. Keep a master list of what you have in each box. If you get in late moving and need that one item that night, you already know where it is. For example, you know you aren’t going to want to unpack everything the next morning without a cup of coffee, now you will know exactly where your coffee pot is!

Use packing as a time to clean out some of your belongings and donate to charity, have a yard sale, or head to a recycling center.

Keep each box to a 50 lbs. max or below 30 lbs whenever possible. Moving heavier boxes could cause you injury and are more likely to burst their tape or seams during the move.

Make sure to leave enough time to pack your belongings. It usually takes about about a month to pack a whole household. Make a calendar of what needs to be done & do your best to stick by it

While it’s not required it is nice if you have water on hand for your movers. In the heat/humidity of summer/fall it is much appreciated and makes for a happy crew

Wrap a piece of tape around wires, matching the ends to create a “flag” area to write on. Lable the wire what it is like, “TV to DVD” or “DVD power cord”

Use a digital or cell phone camera to take pictures of how wiring (television/DVD, speaker system) is hooked up. Be sure to use plenty of light and careful focus so the pictures will be clear. Print each picture and put it in the top of the box holding the item. This will make hooking up the items in your new place much easier.

When taking apart items to be moved, such as tables, securely tape screws and other small parts to the underside of the item. You’ll always know where to look and save time putting things back together.

Pack an “open me first box” with your essentials you’ll need right after the move. Label it clearly and have it easily accessible among other boxes. With your essentials handy, you can relax as you unpack instead of frantically searching for a must-have item.

Don’t forget the essentials…Make sure every member of the family packed an essentials box for themselves. For kids and teens this should include their favorite things, whether its music, games, books, journals or pictures, encourage them to pack everything together so that all the things that are meaningful for them can be unpacked first.

• Tissue paper – softer than newsprint, used for wrapping very delicate items; also provides cushioning and fills in small spaces when packing fragile figurines and china
• Bubble wrap – plastic packing material made up of hundreds of tiny “air cushions” or bubbles used to over-wrap small, delicate items after they are wrapped in tissue; also helpful when wrapping larger fragile items such as lamps and pictures

Tips on collecting packing supplies
Beware of used boxes – People sometimes try to pack their belongings in used boxes to save money. Beware. Produce boxes often become weakened from the moisture of transportation or product spoilage. Additionally, insects often nest in used boxes.

Use clear Duck® packing tape only– Make sure to seal your boxes with packing tape. Duct tape doesn’t adhere well to corrugated cardboard. Boxes put together with duct tape will fall apart.
